guidance sessions

A group of office workers sit around a meeting room table. They have a laptop and papers in front of them and they are all looking up towards one wall of the meeting room. They look relaxed.

Benefit from my 15+ years of experience as a union organiser & educator and postgraduate HR and H&S qualifications.

I focus on

  • supporting worker representatives

  • improving employment relationships

  • boosting worker engagement, participation and representation in health and safety.

I'm an NZISM member but I'm not a qualified H&S consultant. I abide by the NZ Institute of Safety Management code of ethics and will always help connect you with more qualified practitioners as required.

If you've got something specific you'd like to explore in your session, add a note to your booking. I'm also fine with discussing whatever is top of your mind when we meet.

You can book a one-off or repeat sessions. Your first session is always free.

We can also make a formal supervision arrangement if you'd like structured development support through a non-managerial relationship.

Some employers will pay/reimburse the cost of your session. Ask first, and check whether you can attend in paid work time.

I only send invoices after our session. I run a very gentle cancellation policy and your session details are always confidential

I help teams boost worker participation, engagement and representation in health & safety. Explore issues, trouble-shoot sticking points, or get new ideas.

If you're wanting a longer session, it's likely we'll need to develop or adapt a more formal training course. Book a free consultation with me to explore your ideas.

I'm an experienced facilitator and coach, happy to work with whatever issues come up.

Examples of topics I've helped clients explore:

  • finding your way as a worker rep, managing ethical advocacy boundaries

  • functional support for health and safety representatives

  • discovering workers' honest insights and attitudes toward real (or imagined!) work practice

  • using technical health and safety terms without creating a jargon that alienates the people you serve

  • using disagreement, 'bad' news, and relentless curiosity to build useful cooperation

  • developing effective worker engagement and/or organising plans for H&S issues

  • mapping the dynamic relationship between H&S and collective bargaining/industrial relations

  • foundation-level discussion of specific workplace hazards and risk management
  • building a health & safety education plan for yourself or for your team

  • identifying psychosocial hazards, especially during tough times (what can we eliminate, control, or influence?)

  • the modified hierarchy of controls for psychosocial hazards (especially: changing work not the worker)
  • the strengths and limits of our legislation, regulations and worker compensation frameworks

  • finding relevant and credible tools and resources to use in your own work, from NZ and overseas.

  • ensuring your worker participation agreement adds real value in accordance with H&S best practice (e.g., AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009
